FactCheck.Org on the Mobile Web

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Curious to learn just the facts about the health care bill or the 2010 census? m.factcheck.org might be a good resource while you are on the run.

Factcheck.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. They monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases and then report on it on this site.

I have found this site particularly useful during elections when the mudsling is in full effect. They break down the topics in a digestible way and appear to give both sides.

The easy to use Search feature allows me to just find what I need and I can even email the editor questions or read the weekly FactCheck Mailbag to see what others are interested in.

The gubernatorial elections are coming up in many states this June. I’ll be checking back into this site before I go to the polls.

WhipCast for BlackBerry? *Empty*

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

whip-cast1

Republican representatives Eric Cantor of Virginia and Kevin McCarthy of California, aiming to compete with the Democrats’ technical edge, have released a new BlackBerry app. WhipCast is designed to be “a pocket card for the 21st century,” and to allow users to check talking points and bill facts, follow votes, plan floor action and supposedly even check out the latest jabs from the Daily Show.

“Today’s launch of the WhipCast BlackBerry app is the latest demonstration of our commitment to modernize the way we communicate with Americans from coast-to-coast,” Cantor said.

“I think it’ll go viral,” said McCarthy, the minority’s chief deputy whip, who is also the app’s chief evangelist.

But Kristie Greco, communications director for House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, wasn’t impressed. “They can roll out as many applications and technologies as they want, but their [approval] numbers are still at historic lows,” Greco said. “I don’t see how this helps them.”

Curious to check out the “Friday Funny,” I downloaded WhipCast.

Aside from an intro video with a retro spy-movie soundtrack, there was no content.

Every category turned up empty. No Talking Points, no Bill Facts, just *Empty*, *Empty*, *Empty*.

Impacting change while you are mobile

Monday, July 6th, 2009

As the good citizen that I try to be, I am always looking for ways to speak out on issues that mean a lot to me.  So when I got wind of this application that allows me to write to my legislators, view their voting record, compare my votes with theirs, all on my Blackberry.  I was super excited.Visual Vote on the Blackberry

Visible Votes seems to be the perfect solution for the on-the-go activist.  The Blackberry application can be found here http://www.visiblevote.us/blackberrybetainfo.php If you have the CREDO Mobile BlackBerry Curve, point your browser to the second link http://visiblevote.us/bb/legacyv11/visiblevote.jad

See a demo of the app on YouTube

Another cool thing about Visible Vote is that it syncs up with your Facebook account, never mind that the process was not a seamless one. It took me about 20 minutes to download the app to my Blackberry, and set up my Facebook profile – way too much time for a vehicle that is supposed to be nimble.

I would give this app 4 out of 5 stars only because it is very cool to be able to write to your representatives on the go from your smartphone which is not insignificant.

Put Congress and the White House on your speed dial.

Monday, June 8th, 2009

When you’re a CREDO Mobile member, it’s free to call Congress and the White House.*

And even if you aren’t a CREDO subscriber, isn’t democracy worth a few of your anytime minutes?

Why not put the Congressional switchboard on your speed dial. Then when you’re in line at the grocery store or waiting for the bus, you can call politicians. Obama may be the president, but he’s going to need our help to push change through the Congress, given the power the conservative minority possess in the Senate.

Amy Goodman, a hero of ours, came to speak with staff and customers at CREDO Mobile a few weeks back. She told us a story about the famed labor activist and African American leader A. Philp Randolph that she also wrote about in a national newspaper column.

Harry Belafonte recalled in an interview with Tavis Smiley recently a story he was told by Eleanor Roosevelt. She related a public event when her husband, FDR, introduced Randolph and asked him, Belafonte recalled, “what he thought of the nation, what he thought of the plight of the Negro people and what did he think … where the nation was headed.” Continuing the story, Belafonte recounted what FDR replied upon hearing Randolph’s remarks: “You know, Mr. Randolph, I’ve heard everything you’ve said tonight, and I couldn’t agree with you more. I agree with everything that you’ve said, including my capacity to be able to right many of these wrongs and to use my power and the bully pulpit. … But I would ask one thing of you, Mr. Randolph, and that is go out and make me do it.”

This story was retold by Obama at a campaign fundraiser in Montclair, N.J., more than a year ago. It was in response to a person asking Obama about finding a just solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. After recounting the Randolph story, Obama said he was just one person, that he couldn’t do it alone. Obama’s final answer: “Make me do it.”

Here’s how to add the White House and Capitol switchboards to your speed dial.

  1. Create separate contacts for the White House (202-456-1414) and the Congressional Switchboard (202-224-3121) and save them.
  2. Highlight the contact for the White House and choose “Options”
  3. Pick the option “Set Speed Dial”
  4. Choose the Speed Dial number (usually “1″ is voicemail so these start at 2)
  5. Press “Menu/OK”
  6. Start again and do the same for Congressional Switchboard

(You can also refer directly to the user guide for your CREDO Mobile phone here, or look up your own user guide with Google if you’re not a customer).

* CREDO Mobile customers get up to 30 minutes per month in free anytime calls to White House and Congress.
