Three bloggers to win BlackBerry Curve smartphone and 12 months unlimited service from CREDO Mobile.
CREDO Mobile and Netroots Nation are teaming up to award a BlackBerry® Curve™ 8330 smartphone, plus one year’s service, to three deserving recipients.
There will be one winner, determined by the highest number of votes submitted via text message, in each of three categories:
- Best National Blogger
- Best State or Local Blogger
- Blog Activist of the Year
Please cast your votes today! Just text the keyword (“national,” “state” or “activist”) plus your favorite blogger’s name or “handle” to short code 27336. Examples:

One vote per category per voter; you’re welcome to vote in all three categories if you wish. Please note:
- Vote for your favorite blogger (a person)—not your favorite blog (a site).
- If your favorite blogger usually posts under a handle or alias, please use that in your text message, not his or her real name.
Voting closes: Saturday, August 15th 10:00 a.m. ET
Winners will be announced Saturday evening, August 15, at the Netroots Nation conference in Pittsburgh.

Voting:
- Voting eligibility is restricted to US-based mobile phone numbers. One vote per category (total three) per phone number; multiple votes in the same category from the same phone will be discarded.
- CREDO reserves the right to discard any votes that are not submitted in the format specified above.
- Voters do not need to be registered attendees of the Netroots Nation 2009 conference in order to vote.
- There’s no charge to vote, but standard text messaging charges from your carrier will apply (unless you’re a CREDO Mobile member, in which case text messages to 27336 are free.)
Prizes:
- One BlackBerry Curve Smartphone and one year’s domestic unlimited voice and data service from CREDO, plus contract buyout reimbursement up to $200.
- A prize winner residing in a location without CREDO coverage may choose an alternate prize of a $1000 directed donation from CREDO to their favorite 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
- Winners must be actively engaged in posting online progressive political commentary or activism on one or more publicly-available websites.
- Winners need not be present at (or registered attendees of) the Netroots Nation conference to win.
- Prizes are not transferable.
- Employees of CREDO Mobile and Netroots Nation, as well as their immediate families, are not eligible to win.

Good question.
Unfortunately we only offer mobile service here in the US, so the prize only includes domestic voice & data service. If your favorite blogger were to win, he or she would probably have to choose the alternate prize described in point two under prizes above.
(I’m not saying don’t vote for, let’s say, Glenn Greenwald…just that the contest, and prizes, are more geared towards bloggers for whom we can provide service.)

So a cellphone company runs a little contest that encourages more use of a cellphone ($$). How utterly contemptible.

Do feel free to hold all the contempt you want, but directing it at us is misguided. We’re actually making the texts free for our customers, and won’t be seeing any income from texts sent in through other carriers. Our goals here are twofold:a) to reward three progressive bloggers a fairly valuable prize in recognition of their hard work, and b) use mobile phones in a new way to let the community at large decide on the winners. If you disagree with those goals, that’s certainly your right, and you’re (of course) free to not participate in the contest.
Can the same person be voted for in all three catagories if a person feels it applies?

My phone does not allow six digit numbers either, so I wish you had an option for the rest of us. Otherwise, it is skewed voting by a certain technology.
I know it won’t count, but I vote for Shannyn, a Girl from Homer, for State (AK) Blogger of the Year, and AKMuckraker of Mudflats for Blog Activist of the Year. Both have done yeoman’s duty in keeping us informed about Sarah Palin, crises in the Yukon Villages (helped mobilize massive relief efforts when the state did nothing), and other issues with humor, style and grace.
I don’t have texting so I guess my vote doesn’t count. I would expect that on a conservative poll, but progressives should be open to the voices of those at the other end of the economic income spectrum.
Totally agree with CO almost native. Shannyn for State (AK) Blogger & AKMuckraker of Mudflats for Activist. And for National – Steve Benen. But since I don’t have texting, guess I’m just another stilled voice.

I have to say ditto to the responses of most of the above posters. I would love to vote for both Shannyn Moore and AKMuckraker (and I’m not even an Alaskan – unless they want to annex PA!). But alas, I’m poor, unemployed, and unable to afford a cell phone – so consequently I’m a disenfranchised voter. My bad. Maybe it would surprise you to know that not everyone in the world is (or wants to be) attached to a cell phone…? As a cell phone co., I’m guessing you couldn’t care less about such people – not your crowd.

B/c it might be an admirable goal to reward some progressive bloggers, but you aren’t that altruistic – you’re in the business of selling phones, and doing what you can to create a bigger market. You just lost this potential future customer – I’ll be taking advantage of your other offer to not participate in the contest, since as you so condescendingly put it – “I’m free to do so”.
