Are you a political junkie?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

It seems like every week political junkies have another app to stay engaged. At CREDO Action we are always needing to stay up-to-date on political news. Luckily, there are a couple of great new apps.

All of these apps can be found in the Android Market place.

Android_CongressCongress is a fantastic source all things congress. Find news, look up Senator’s contact info, and track legislation. This is all really political geeky stuff. This app has won a number of awards and is published by a great organization called the Sunlight Foundation.

ANDROID-APP-HOME-PAGEHuffington Post is one of the most widely read progressive political news sources and is updated throughout the day. Some of the best progressive reporters are now at Huffpo and many big political names post commentary there. You’ll also find tech news, sports, style, travel, business and some salacious entertainment news if that is your cup of tea.

The Hill is the super inside the beltway, Washington DC, insider congressional news source. If you want to know what political hacks in DC are reading then this is for you.

Amazon Kindle for Android

Monday, August 16th, 2010

There is much talk about e-books and now there are so many e-book store fronts. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders and even Apple have all jumped into the digital media and books distribution business. Personally, I love E-Books. I love the idea of being able to download a book in a matter of minutes. I’m one of those early-adopters that wants things right away. I can’t wait for UPS to deliver it.

That being said, my e-book storefront of choice is Amazon. Why? Glad you asked. Amazon has a really nice platform that allows their customers to read their Amazon-purchased books on many devices. I often will buy an E-Book on my desktop and need to take it with me. That’s where my HTC Hero comes in. Using the Amazon Kindle for Android app, I am able to read all my purchased books right on my phone!

Sounds great right? BlackBerry Tour users can download the the Kindle app for free as well. For more information go to: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000468551

Happy Reading!

Android Market apps get better and better

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

I love apps, I also love app updates. It’s very common for Android developers to put out an app and later update it with new features, bug fixes, levels, challenges etc..

This is what makes the already great Android Market even greater! Take for example the Facebook app. The latest Market version is 1.2, if you haven’t already – go and download the update. 1.2 brings new functionality such as being able to browse your inbox without having to access it through the  browser.

To check and see if any software updates are available:

From within the Android Market, press the Menu Button -> Tap Downloads. Here you will see a list of your downloaded apps. If an update is available, you will see “Update available” to the right of the app name.

Tap on the app with the update available.

Tap Update to begin the update process.

Open Spot, Google’s latest app

Monday, July 12th, 2010

There are many things I love about Google. One of the biggest ones is their dedication to the Android Market. They’ve launched apps like Google Goggles, Maps with Navigation, Sky Map and now they’ve announced Open Spot.

Open Spot is a very clever idea that can help users find open street parking spots. Using your HTC Hero’s GPS capabilities, Open Spot is able to locate you and show available parking spots in your area. When looking at the map you will see 3 different pins representing available parking spots.

  • Red pins are freshly-marked spots.
  • Or ange pins are spots marked over 5 minutes ago.
  • Yellow pin s are spots marked over 10 minutes ago.

You can help your fellow Android community by marking available parking spots when you make one available. Sharing is quick, easy and can earn you “karma points”.

I’m very excited about Open Spot especially since I’m in downtown San Francisco all the time. Parking can be a bit difficult to find – especially on the weekends. Instead of driving around the block many times , I can now tap into the Android community for help.

“Start helping others find parking, and together we’ll all save time, save gas, and reduce pollution.”

**To download Open Spot with your Credo Mobile HTC Hero, press the Home button -> press the Menu button -> Tap All programs -> Find and tap Market -> Search for Open Spot.

Planning a trip? Consider Kayak.

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Travel season is slowly creeping up. For those like me that are already looking to go home for the holidays, consider using Kayak. I’ve had great luck in finding low priced airfare right on my BlackBerry Curve 8530. The app is free and available in the BlackBerry App World.

I’ve actually spent some time comparing the prices that Kayak offered with their online competitors. I found that Kayak was very competitive, often cheaper but never more expensive. The app is well made, easy to use and has additional features such as a list of Airline companies and their fees. Beyond that, the Kayak app is also available for the HTC Hero :)

I recommend Kayak for all the reasons I’ve listed – let me know what your Kayak experience is like.

What I’ve been up to..

Monday, May 17th, 2010

On my mobile handset (and I’ve been using an Android handset in addition to my BlackBerry lately), I tend to look for apps that are either media portals (those that deliver news and or blog content seamlessly) or tools (such as a flashlight app). As I walk between the BlackBerry and Android worlds I’ve been looking to see which specific apps, media delivery and types of tools, that work well in both worlds.

Here’s what I’m up to:

Media
There are a ton of media sites and apps. I believe that very soon you will be able to find an app for your favorite news source on any platform. For the moment here are my picks (all are free unless specifically noted):

Android
• Huffington Post – Original content from one of the most popular blogs out there.
• Engadget – My personal favorite gadget news site.
• AP Mobile – For all AP wire stories.

Black Berry
• New York Times – All the news that’s fit to Print
• Slate – My favorite online magazine. Lots of great writing, debate, and even a bit of fluff.
• AP Mobile – For all AP wire stories.

Tools
For the most part I think the simpler the app the better. Here are my top faves:

Flashlight tools – Completely awesome when it is all you have. When your parking meter change falls out of your pocket at night, a flashlight app can save you from the risk of parking tickets. There are a number of apps out there. Some use a handset’s flash LED (on my BlackBerry tour, for example) and some use the handset’s LCD screen (as on my Android handset).

BlackBerry
• BestFlash ($2.99)

Android
• Color Flashlight

Guitar Tuner – This little app replaces my standalone guitar tuner and tuning fork. Yea! There a number of them for Android. There are a few for Blackberry but they tend to be pricey.

Android
• G Strings Guitar Tuner

BlackBerry
• Guitar Studio ($9.99), also includes chord library and some other useful utilities.

New York Times Politics Notifier

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The New York Times Politics Notifier app allows you quick access to New York Times Political News Stories and the New York Times political-based Caucus Blog. You can access up-to-the minute news, analysis, and commentary and be alerted to updates by pop-ups or vibrations. This app won’t provide you any content that you couldn’t get in other fashions, but it does make it easy to get and view the latest political news. And that is generally what I’m looking for in a mobile app: anything that makes it easier to what I’d otherwise do in a more time-consuming, less-mobile way.

It’s free and available from BlackBerry App World.

Tripit for BlackBerry smartphones

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Whenever I get an update from LinkedIn, there are always a few updates of people who are returning from a trip or leaving on a trip via TripIt. TripIt is a site that gathers all of your travel information in one place, logs miles, and makes traveling everywhere on business or pleasure a competitive game between your friends.

I don’t necessarily want to broadcast my travel schedule, and I’m not so sure about the I travel more than you game, but I think maybe there is something to this TripIt app. There is a version of the app for BlackBerry phones so I go to http://m.tripit.com/uhp/blackberry and download the beta version of the app to try it out.

You start by creating a login at www.tripit.com.
Then you can send any email confirmation from your trip planning to plans@tripit.com and it starts building trips and organizing your information into one itinerary plan.

I sent camp site reservations, priceline car rental info, and flight info, all of which automatically registered as a trip or an activity on a trip in my tripit app. The app itself is pretty limited so I recommend setting up the trip mostly using the website. But once setup, the app is very handy to have. It automatically pulls up google maps to locate any address, launches websites for things like airport and hotel info. The best part about the app is that if you forget what time your flight departs, you don’t have your confirmation code, or you need to call your hotel, you can launch TripIt and it’s all right there in the app. It even generates directions and local area maps automatically to help you on your trip.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

Green Offsets your mobile phone

Monday, December 14th, 2009

If you are in the market for a new mobile phone for yourself or to give as a gift for the holidays, you might consider picking up this new product: Green Your Phone. It’s an energy offset that covers the manufacturing of 2 phones and for the amount of electricity you will use to charge 2 phones over the next 2 yrs.

green-your-phone

By purchasing the $10 Green Your Phone card, you are purchasing energy from a Wind Farm to replace the electricity you will be using over the life of your phone and making sure it gets put back onto the grid.

Check it out at Best Buy.

More mobile activism for cyclists

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Back in June, I posted on how cyclists can use their cameraphones to clear the bike lanes of cars. I am happy to announce that the City of Belmont has just made parking illegal on Ralston Avenue (thank you!). Hopefully, this means no more cars blocking the bike lane. A victory for cyclists and mobile activism by cameraphone!!!

Our work is not done, sadly. Cyclists with cameraphones have moved on to yet another very important goal – improving conditions for cyclists on Caltrain.

Caltrain is the main commuter rail service between San Jose and San Francisco. Caltrain has special bike cars where cyclists can store their bikes. This makes it easier to get to and from the station sans gasoline. As interest in bike/train commuting has grown, however, cyclists have faced challenges in using this service – 1) cyclists still get “bumped” from trains when the bike cars are already full; and 2) cyclists are often forced to sit on the floor, stand, or sit away from their bikes as there is insufficient seating in the bike cars.

My CREDO Mobile Blackberry Curve is again a great tool for documenting and drawing attention to problems. I can take pictures or videos of bikers forced to sit on the floor. I can then post them to our “Cyclists for a Better Caltrain” group on Facebook and share them with other activists, decision makers, and the press. I can also point out when the conductors have done something fabulous that makes bikers more comfortable and helps the trains run on schedule.

If you are a cyclist who rides Caltrain, please join our group on Facebook. IF you are looking to join up with other bike activists, make sure to join the incredible San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Strength in numbers!
